The Beech tree has been identified as a retention category ‘R’ tree - for removal. This tree had the remains of Meripilus giganteus at its base on the eastern side, adjacent to Kirklands Road.
Meripilus giganteus causes decay in the tree roots which can eventually lead to the tree becoming unstable and eventually collapse. Due to the size and location of this tree it is a potential hazard and if found to be structurally unstable it should be removed immediately. As this tree is a structurally important tree that offers high amenity, its loss would have a high impact on the surrounding area. Its removal therefore needs to be justified. I advise that a Resistograpth or Picus be used to determine the extent of the decay and based on the results of this, a decision can be made whether the tree warrants removal or whether it can be retained. I have made recommendations for a decay detection analysis to be undertaken and advise that this be carried out as soon as possible.
