Shipley Glen Tramway
Shipley Glen can be reached from Saltaire and Baildon Green on the Glen Tramway. Britain’s oldest working cable railway, built in I 895.At this time the local Aire Valley was black with smoke from mills and domestic chimneys and a trip to the Glen was a holiday for the masses who worked there. At one time 17,000 people used the Tramway in a single day. At present, the Tramway is run by Mike Leak with the help of his wife and volunteers. Recently, with the support of Bradford Council, a Glen Tramway Preservation Company Ltd. has been set up with six trustees with the aim of guaranteeing its future. This is especially important since Saltaire became a World Heritage Site. The Trust is forming a Friends of the Glen Tramway Group o give support. Friends of the Glen Tramway-Richard Freeman530383.
