Shipley Glen Tramway Work Print E-mail
Written by Paul Marfell

A historic attraction on our doorstep.

The Shipley Glen Cable Tramway is the oldest working cable tramway in Great Britain (cliff lifts excepted). Dating from 1895, the line was built to serve the local beauty of Shipley Glen. At nearly a quarter-mile in length, the woodland ride provides a pleasant alternative to the steep path. The lower part of the tramway can be seen at the back of the field between Titus Salt School and Glenaire Primary School.

Temporary Closure of Tramway for Ongoing Maintenance and Engineering Work

As can be expected safety regulations are a lot tighter than they were in 1895. To meet current legislation and to ensure continuity for the foreseeable future it had to close after the 2008 Santa Specials whilst they commissioned two new Tramcars. These are in the process of being re-built.

The snow and frost earlier this year delayed the project as they had to cast a 3 ton block of cement as anchorage before the final phase of the engineering work could be started.

For this work the Shipley Glen Tramway provided £11,500 from its own resources and Bradford Council provided £10,000
However more work and more money is needed for work on the haulage wheel and electronic control system to be completed.

Become a "Friend"

Why not become a Friend of the Glen Tramway. Families who donate £10 become "Friends" and also receive a family pass for 6 to ride free on the tramway until the end of 2011 (this does not include the very popular Santa Specials). Please send your donations to:

Baildon Walkers. An appeal for MEN! Print E-mail
Written by Peter Hartingdon

(Walking The Way To Health)

This is a group of walkers who meet and walk every Wednesday led by walk leaders, Peter & Yvonne Kierman.

Initiated by the NHS and often used by doctors as referrals for anyone who would benefit from regular exercise, Peter and Yvonne are trained volunteer walk leaders, and regularly lead a group of Baildon residents on short walks around the Baildon area. Although anyone can join, you do not have to live in Baildon, they have walkers from far and wide who come regularly. The group usually meet on the green by the Baildon in Bloom wheel barrow, near Newton Way Surgery 10.30am for a 10.45 start. After the walk, which usually lasts one hour, the group visit Wesley’s for refreshments and a chat. Occasionally trips by mini coach are arranged to visit and walk further afield. Recently the group traveled to St Annes on Sea for a day out. The walks do not have a cost, however the minibus options have a small charge.

The group would ideally like to have more gentlemen walkers than the 6 or 7 who attend. So, why not give it ago especially now that the “warmer” weather is upon us! Not restricted to gents, of course, all are very welcome to join. Just pop along on a Wednesday, or you can contact either Peter or Yvonne, on 01943 601474.

David Cameron at Pace in Saltaire Print E-mail
Written by Paul Marfell

The news coverage of this event on Friday afternoon tends not to mention that David Cameron was at Pace in Saltaire for his first major speech. I don't remember the speech mentioning Bradford, Shipley or Saltaire but he did mention Pace..
