Lapwings |

Baildon Moor is a great place for wildlife and several bird species breed in the area.
Later in the Spring there will be many birds nesting on the ground. We will all need to keep our eyes open to avoid these areas so that the eggs can hatch.
Fieldfare, a winter visitor, can sometimes be seen in there hundreds in some of the adjacent fields.
This year in February there are flocks of Starlings, Lapwings, Golden Plover and a few Curlew.

On 27th December 2011 on the summit of Hope Hill 7 golden plovers flew in and settled near the trig point. Walking off the summit towards Dobrudden a short-eared owl flew up out of the rushes just 5 metres from us. Reaching the trees lining the field boundary above Hope Farm we saw a little owl perched on a branch - we were only around 10m away and it stayed put.
On 4th Jan 2012 saw 35 golden plovers fly in and land just below Hope Hill summit. 4 grey partridge seen feeding on a golf green near bottom of Dobrudden track.

Dog vomit slime mould |

Odd- looking white or yellow lumps and patches are to be seen on plant stems and grasses at the moment. The general appearance is a sponge, an inch or a few inches across, mainly white with black specks or occasionally bright sulphurous yellow. This is the slime mould Fuligo septica, commonly known as dog vomit slime mould or scrambled egg mould. There`s lots below Hope farm and I`ve seen a few patches around the moor car parks. Its not uncommon, but seems prolific this year, no doubt helped by the damp and quite warm conditions.

Black Bellied Dipper |

On Saturday 8 October 2011 a Black Bellied Dipper was spotted at Denso Marston Nature Reserve by Steve, the warden. This is a first for the reserve and could be a first for the Bradford area.
Edit: This has caused quite a stir in the birding community. Many people are simply asking "Have you seen it?" - meaning the Black Bellied Dipper.

Wheatear seen on Ghyll Beck Driving Range Mon 3 Oct 2011. Glad to have somewhere to record sightings and let people know the variety around us in Baildon. Some of my favourite sightings in the summer months were a Hummingbird Hawkmoth on Butler Lane, a 3" common lizard on the moor near Dobrudden and very fat goldfish in a moorland pond.

Mink on the river |

Mink have been seen and photographed along the banks of the river at Denso Marston Nature Reserve.
Mink are not native to the UK and have had a significant (devastating?) affect on various native UK species.
Photos have been posted on the Flickr group for Denso Marston Nature Reserve here.
