Baildon Royal Hostel information - 2009/03/27 20:12 Hi,

I am looking for information about Baildon Royal Hostel in connection with a search for info on my mother who arrived from Poland sometime before 1948.

A snippet of info that I have is that her address on her marriage certificate in 1948 is shown as

Baildon Royal Hostel, Baildon

and that she was a

Worsted Fly Spinner

From reading your other pages I have found info about Baildon Old Hall that

For most of the 18th century the Butlers lived at Stead Hall. Anne Butler married Isaac Hollings of Bradford and she leased the Hall to Richard Goldsborough a worsted stuff manufacturer. His descendants lived there until the early 20th century.

Any information that would help me to fill in any detail about her life, where she lived or worked would be very appreciated. I was hoping initially that maybe Baildon Royal Hostel still existed in some form and would maybe have records, but I can't find any details of it still in existence. Some information on the Hostel would be interesting in it's own right.

Thanks in advance for any information.

Re:Baildon Royal Hostel information - 2009/05/25 12:50 Info passed to me:-
The question of a hostel for workers in the mill's arose last year (2008). It was suggested to me (Stewart Main) that it was on the Coach Road but I could not find it. The Coach Road was very rural after the war and a building like a hostel would have been remembered by local residents who still live in the area.

A large house is at present being demolished at the corner where Green Lane and the Otley Road meet. This was the hostel where many Italian women workers lived after the war, being employed at C. F. Taylor in the Worsted trade.

I discussed this subject with two women who were living on Glenaire Drive during and after the war. They both have good memories and are alert, intelligent women, Anne and June. They told me only one Hostel existed, and they thought it was for Italian women. It is referred to in Baildon Council minutes.

Anne and June suggested perhaps, that Polish women might have lived in the same hostel. Both groups could have worked at the mills.

A number of streets existed on that corner or nearby which have since been demolished.
