Ask around your friends for someone with a video capture card, or TV card for a PC. The video output from the VHS player can then be saved on the PC, edited and then burnt to a DVD.

There are lots of articles on the internet on how to do it. Try Googling.

Many people also have combined VHS and DVD recorders - put both in, press a few buttons and away it goes.
