Parrot in the wild of Saltaire - 2007/02/28 09:44 Today I saw a green parrot in the trees by the gates to the United Reform Church in Saltaire. This is just across the river from Baildon so it is possible a Baildon resident has lost a parrot.

A Saltaire resident has reported it to the RSPCA on 08705 555 999 and also to the Parrot Protection Network (or something similarly called) recommended by the RSPCA - and left a message for John Hayward 01442 872245.

You can see where I saw it on this map Click on Parrot in the list.

Re:Parrot in the wild of Saltaire - 2007/03/05 20:45 I have been in touch with the RSPB and asked if it was likely that the bird was from wild birds further south. The reply quite surprised me.Sadly, it is far from convincing that the birds in northern England are from the southern populations. There was a sudden upsurge of reports late in 2005 at the time of the original avian flu scare and it is almost certain that some birds were deliberately released. One such example in Bury, Lancashire showed clear signs that it was familiar with human contact until subsequently taken by a sparrowhawk.

Re:Parrot in the wild of Saltaire - 2007/04/04 18:21 I have spoken to a woman who has spent some time most days over the last 3 months gaining the confidence of this parrot. She is making slow progress and has asked that others do not try to catch it. Some have tried but have instead scared the bird, she then has to start gaining the confidence of the bird again.

Also, if people could NOT feed the bird it has more need to approach the woman to get food. She therefore has a better chance of catching it. She has a cage in which to put the bird.

The bird is owned by someone called Mark (aka Woody) who is known by the people at the shop on the far end of Higher Coach Road.

If anyone has more information about this bird they can post to this discussion board.

Re:Parrot in the wild of Saltaire - 2008/06/02 08:50 Sat in the garden on Saturday afternoon I was amazed to hear what sounded like a parrot and then a few seconds later it flew overhead, about 30ft up circled Bilsdale Way / Glen Rise area and then headed up towards Baildon Moor.

Heard it calling a few times since......

Re:Parrot in the wild of Saltaire - 2008/06/02 21:22 It's going back more than 12 months now but I was told that the parrot at Saltaire seemed to be pally with a particular crow and that it had started making crow like noises.
