Shipley Glen Tramway Work
Written by Paul Marfell

A historic attraction on our doorstep.

The Shipley Glen Cable Tramway is the oldest working cable tramway in Great Britain (cliff lifts excepted). Dating from 1895, the line was built to serve the local beauty of Shipley Glen. At nearly a quarter-mile in length, the woodland ride provides a pleasant alternative to the steep path. The lower part of the tramway can be seen at the back of the field between Titus Salt School and Glenaire Primary School.

Temporary Closure of Tramway for Ongoing Maintenance and Engineering Work

As can be expected safety regulations are a lot tighter than they were in 1895. To meet current legislation and to ensure continuity for the foreseeable future it had to close after the 2008 Santa Specials whilst they commissioned two new Tramcars. These are in the process of being re-built.

The snow and frost earlier this year delayed the project as they had to cast a 3 ton block of cement as anchorage before the final phase of the engineering work could be started.

For this work the Shipley Glen Tramway provided £11,500 from its own resources and Bradford Council provided £10,000
However more work and more money is needed for work on the haulage wheel and electronic control system to be completed.

Become a "Friend"

Why not become a Friend of the Glen Tramway. Families who donate £10 become "Friends" and also receive a family pass for 6 to ride free on the tramway until the end of 2011 (this does not include the very popular Santa Specials). Please send your donations to:
